So Wimbledon’s over and the men’s champion is – Roger Federer. But he was that last year right? And even before that…and even before that….well he’s been that for 5 years now. With the 2007 championship under his belt for the fifth consecutive time, Federer now stands level to the great Bjorn Borg, who was crowned every year from 1976 until 1980. The two men are now level in the Wimbledon record books. What a player…what a man..all the best Roger…go get the sixth one!!

Hum Jeet Gaye!

Finally a series win abroad for Team India. Job well done guys! The last win was back in 2002 at the memorable Natwest Series in England more popular for the infamous Ganguly Shirt swirling episode. The hero not very surprisingly was Yuvraj Singh back in the 2002 final and also again here against South Africa doing what he does best – Finishing it off! Well done Yuvi and good luck Team India for the rest of the season ahead.

Safari 3.0 launched for Mac & Windows

by Amitabh on 13 Jun '07

I can finally say good bye to Firefox on my Mac. One of the main reasons I had still not been able to give up on Firefox was it’s wonderful and cool Search bar which sat at the bottom and let you search, highlight and then cycle through the occurrences of the word you searched for. Well with the new release of the Apple browser – Safari3.0, the search bar or the Find Banner as Apple likes to call it now becomes available on Safari and as is expected from Apple, in a much more innovative and user friendly way.

I will be back!

by Amitabh on 8 Jun '07

As you can probably tell by the amount of inactivity around here, things have kept Amitabh busy and away from blogging. The screenshot below is a witness by itself – the number of unread feeds on my rss reader. Phewww….as Arnie would say in the Terminator “I will be back”….. hopefully soon enough!!

Apple @ NYC

by Amitabh on 28 May '07

I was in New York city over the weekend and didn’t miss out on the opportunity to visit the new Apple store in Manhattan. The store really is a marvel. Created inside a giant glass cube, the store is a major attraction at the Fifth avenue right across the Central Park. The store is located in the basement of the glass cube, so you enter the glass cube and walk down through the spiral stairs to unveil the world of Macs and ipods.

A little morale booster

by Amitabh on 25 May '07

I was flipping through the papers in my desk drawer last night in a bid to find my sunglasses (why was I looking for my sunglasses in the middle of a stack of papers?? that’s just my way of staying organized!) and came across this bookmark with some motivational text on it (no not a web bookmark…a paper bookmark you friggin geek) that I had bought a few months back, which was now biting dust.

I was just about to throw it through the window but then decided to read it one last time before doing the honors….so I read it…and then I read it again and was so impressed that I decided to not only keep it right on my desk but also write the quote here so as to wake up some more dead souls, and boost their morale, so here it goes -

You’re really something, do you know that? And in spite of whatever may happen to your day, you are going to stay that way: trying and giving and living life in the best way you know how.

You’ve made it through difficult things before, right? Right. And you always land on your feet. Maybe not dancing; maybe not always sure about what to do next. But you always manage to figure things out. Especially when you’re able to keep your sense of humor and not lose your smile. if you really think about it you’ll realize that you are a very strong individual. Someone who may not have all the answers but who is at least willing to hope and try and believe.

So keep your spirits up, and keep things in perspective. It’s going to be okay” – Ceal Carson

Hope that lifts up the dead spirits!! It did for me…

Hello I am a Mac

by Amitabh on 19 May '07

I am absolutely loving the reincarnation! Having used Windows for close to 9 years, it does seem a little weird seeing things work so much better and so elegantly. I am sure it will take me a little while getting fully accustomed to the intricacies of OSX…but then dropping 9 yrs of bad habits would take some time right?? ;) but I am definitely getting there…

Continuing from my last post, here’s a quick update on things that amaze me on my Macbook-
1. The widgets – I LOVE THE DASHBOARD, so many options, so easy, so useful, so beautiful!!
2. Bluetooth support – I turned on my Sony Ericson phone, it was detected straight away by the macbook, and what’s more – in less than 10 seconds it was all set up and I synced my contacts in less than 30 seconds. I tell from experience, Windows XP drove me crazy with bluetooth (among many other things ofcourse!!)
3. Airport Wireless – My Macbook and my Dell laptop from work lost the Internet connection this morning. I would like to blame the Netgear router…Now the Dell usually does that every now and then and the fix is to disable the network connection, enable it, then repair it and wait for the process for a few minutes, then repeat the steps and hope for the best. The Macbook however connected itself back within seconds while the PC struggled for another 10 mins!

There is a bit of learning curve when switching from PC to Mac, but believe me you all, it is totally worth it…I am a mac….and you are??

Available now – Thinking Different

by Amitabh on 15 May '07

01 31 07

So it’s official now, I am thinking different..am thinking great, am thinking Apple!!

After months of thinking and rethinking and then some more, I was finally convinced enough to take the plunge and make the switch from PC to Mac.

Thanks to all the good words and all the pushing by the one dude who by the way I call the the ultimate Mac Nerd – Kunal, I am a proud owner of the brand new, all white n sexy MacBook…so ladies and gentz…take a bow and give a big round of applause to the all new macbook…and to the convincer!!

I will be writing about my trysts with the Mac as and when they come along in the next few days, but for now I must say, it’s a revelation – Apple really rocks!!

It’s amazing how we get so used to the crappy Windows environment (Watch how I am calling Windows names already!) that we begin to think that what the guys at Redmond offer is really the best we can get, that the buggy Windows is really what the standards of computing are…but believe me if you would, Apple is way ahead, way more advanced and way more cooler – It’s no surprise then that Mac OSX really is the world’s most advanced Operating System..!!

Here’s a list of what I have really loved so far and probably all the PC to Mac switchers would (not necessarily in order) -

  1. No Drivers crap
  2. No Uninstall wizards – Simply trash the application file and you are done
  3. No registry mess
  4. I was connected to my secured wireless network even before I began using the mac, it gave me a list of the available networks in it’s set up wizard itself – the wireless management is amazing
  5. The build in camera is awesome!!
  6. Spotlight – the builtin search kicks Vista’s search big time – it’s super fast and it’s bang on target.
  7. No Viruses – can you believe it!!
  8. No Spyware!
  9. The expose feature – manage multiple windows with the tap of a key or a click of a mouse
  10. The dashboard widgets
  11. The awesome animation tricks
  12. The magnetic power plug
  13. It’s core Unix!!

And I promise this list will keep growing in the days to come….as I begin to discover the hidden world of Mac – the world where no BSOD’s exist!!
